Replying to Kevin Lamoureux (Liberal)
“Mr. Speaker, if we take the other side, what about individuals who feel very passionate about the fact that they want to be able to make that decision? Does the member feel any sense of obligation to those individuals? After all, they know they can always reverse the decision. Why does the member feel that person should not have the right to make the decision?”

Mr. Speaker, I will go back to the Carter decision, which said that consent is at the centre of MAID, and the autonomy of the human being to make that decision. A person cannot change their mind anymore after they become incapable. Somebody else has to make that decision for them, and that undermines the autonomy of that person and undermines the very central principle of consent to receiving MAID. That is why I object to it.
