Replying to Guillaume Deschênes-Thériault (Liberal)
“Mr. Speaker, in such a sensitive debate, I would like to ask my colleague why it is important to ensure that we use precise language. In Canada, the term used is medical assistance in dying. We have precise terms that we have been using for nearly a decade now. Why is it important to ensure we use the correct language when debating such a sensitive issue? In what way does this also constitute a matter of respect for the people concerned?”

Mr. Speaker, I agree that using language is important, which is why I call it euthanasia. MAID is an acronym and a term made to sanitize something that is morally very consequential. I think it was used by the government to take something that is very disturbing to many Canadians and make it sound innocuous. It is not innocuous. It is euthanasia. It is about people’s lives being ended. This is serious. We do not need government acronyms in order to talk about this.
