Replying to Garnett Genuis (Conservative)
“Mr. Speaker, that is deeply disappointing. I am here this evening, despite the late hour, and yet the government is unwilling to respond directly to the question. We have put forward five concrete proposals to improve support for families, particularly by offering them more flexibility. The member mentioned one of my proposals, but then went on to discuss other matters. We can talk about other programs and other issues, but tonight we are debating the five concrete proposals that our party has put on the table. Ignoring the concrete proposals we have put forward and instead focusing on unrelated matters is no way to approach this.”

Mr. Speaker, Canadians want a government that works proactively to help them. We do that every day. As I said, we implemented measures to enhance EI benefits, introduced paid sick leave and improved pay equity for women and families. The early learning and child care agreements and the school food programs are saving Canadian families thousands of dollars. The government is working for Canadians by implementing a range of measures. The budget that will be presented later today will be a great opportunity to show Canadians the many measures we are going to take to improve affordability and help Canadian families. I am sure that the budget will include all the measures.
