Replying to Mario Simard (Bloc Québécois)
“Mr. Speaker, the member for Winnipeg North has often oversimplified things in the past, but I found it especially interesting today when he said that people should care more about patients than about jurisdictions. If my colleague were consistent and really cared about patients, he would not accept that his party is making cuts to health transfers, and he would not accept this disgraceful situation where, year after year, the federal government underfunds health care. Right now, the federal government is barely covering 22% of health care costs. If the member really cares about patients, then he should try to convince his government to be less stingy when it comes to health care funding.”

Mr. Speaker, Claims · 48 wordsthere is a long story with respect to health care transfers. We could go back many decades to when the provinces and the federal government made the decision that they wanted some change in tax points to the provinces in favour of having direct cash going to them.1 Reasoning · 35 wordsI was never a big fan of that.Partly on point I believe that the federal government needs to not only have a strong, healthy Canada Health Act but also to maintain a basic level of health transfers. Claims · 49 wordsThat is something the government, under the Prime Minister, has committed to do. In addition to that, I would recognize that the Prime Minister came up with a $5-billion fund to build Canada’s capital health infrastructure.2 I look forward to those health care dollars’ being spent across the country.
