Pierre Poilievre

Replying to Patrick Bonin (Bloc Québécois)
“Mr. Speaker, I know that the Leader of the Opposition is concerned about the scale of the deficit and the waste of public funds. However, a closer look at this budget shows that the government is continuing to hand out billions of dollars in subsidies, particularly for carbon capture projects undertaken by billionaire oil companies. While these companies continue to generate substantial profits, Canadians are paying nearly $2 a litre at the pump. Does the Leader of the Opposition agree that the government should continue providing billions of dollars in subsidies to oil companies?”

Mr. Speaker, I will answer the question once again because it is simple. The oil industry does not need subsidies. It is an exceptionally profitable industry that has no need for them. That is true. If we remove government barriers from their path, oil companies can build pipelines, mines and natural gas liquefaction plants. We need to do away with taxes and barriers and put an end to corporate handouts for all businesses in all sectors. That is the free enterprise we want to see.
