Replying to Branden Leslie (Conservative)
“Mr. Speaker, I thank my hon. colleague for bringing forward this bill and for her remarks. Coming from a rural riding, I know all the dead spots when I am driving, so I know when I am going to hang up before the call simply drops. That is on the highway. When a combine light is on fire and someone cannot call 911, that is a real problem. I have communities that I can stand in the middle of and not be able to make a phone call whatsoever. It is absurd. The telecom companies’ maps say that we have perfect coverage, and they are lying. It is a complete facade. In the last budget that was tabled yesterday, I scanned through to find out what more could be done. I think this legislation is an important step to provide transparency in the mapping. In the budget itself, though, I saw nothing substantial that is going to lead to actual improvements in wireless coverage for my communities.”
