Discussion · Government Orders

“I oppose the government changing the rules for committees. The government just wants to force bills through and stop studies, instead of letting us properly represent the people.”
“Mr. Speaker, this gives me an opportunity to talk a little more about how I see things. The government seems to want to change the composition of committees not in response to a past problem but rather because it wants to anticipate future problems it might encounter. It wants to give itself all the flexibility it needs to ram bills and motions through and to prevent studies from being carried out. That will not necessarily be in the best interests of the people, who would otherwise be duly represented by their representatives in the House. The government wants to give itself free rein to do whatever it wants. It will be, as they say in a language we occasionally hear in Parliament, “my way or the highway”.”
