“The public trusts our government to give businesses the resources they need. In the past, companies did not have the help to succeed. For example, defence businesses used to be excluded from government bank loans. Now we have changed the rules so defence businesses can qualify for that money.”

Mr. Speaker, yes, it is clear that the public trusts our government. They believe we are giving our businesses the resources they need to achieve their goals. For 20 years, I worked with businesses. They did not have the resources to succeed. The government could issue calls for tenders, open up new sectors and create new opportunities all it wanted, but the resources were not there to support them. Take the Business Development Bank of Canada, or BDC, for example, which has adapted its financing criteria for businesses. Six years ago, businesses could not do business with the BDC because certain sectors, such as defence, were excluded. Today, however, that is possible. We are taking a flexible approach to allow sectors within our industry to qualify again and adapt their operations to support this. We are taking real action, and, yes, people can trust our government.
