“We should not vote on this tax cut today. It costs $4 billion, and someone has to pay for it. The measure is already in place anyway. The government is releasing its full budget in a few days. We should look at all these policies together and vote on this as part of the budget.”
“Mr. Speaker, the goal is to help families. The goal is to do so at the lowest possible cost. The goal of redistribution is to do so with as little tax pressure as possible. The Conservatives will say what they want. The reality today is that, if we spend $4 billion on this measure, someone is going to pay. I think they will agree with me that they are not going to improve government operations a year from now. It is not in their DNA to do that. A budget will be tabled on November 5. What I want to know is, if we include the grocery tax credit, that is, the GST rebate with a new name, what will we find in the pockets of a family of two parents and two children in Mirabel or a single person in Mirabel? We have to look at all policies. Today, we are discussing a policy taken in isolation by the government, when in a few days, there will be a budget that will give us the whole picture. Are we voting yea or nay? They will announce it, there will be a vote, and they will stand by it. However, I think there should simply have been a vote on all of this as part of the November 5 budget. There was a notice of ways and means motion. The measure is already in effect, and there is no reason to vote on it a few days before the budget.”
