“We needed a tax on big foreign digital companies to help our media and culture. The government did not give the money to those sectors, and then it got rid of the tax. This wastes billions of dollars that could help our culture and our economy.”
“Madam Speaker, I want to thank my colleague very much, and I look forward to hearing his comments on today’s motion later on. We should remember that this tax was originally requested and required to fund the cultural sector and the media, this entire sector where American digital companies swoop in and get rich. In the end, it was not used for that purpose at all; it was used for something else entirely. It went into the consolidated revenue fund instead of serving the sectors that had been hit hard by those companies entering the market. Yes, as my colleague said, this kind of flip-flopping and back-and-forth is absolutely pointless. In the end, the tax was repealed. We are depriving ourselves of billions of dollars that could give some serious breathing room to our cultural sector, as well as other sectors.”
