“Fewer people are working in Canada than at any point in 29 years. We should train young Canadians for jobs that businesses need to fill. Instead, the government cut grants for students going to Canadian career colleges, while still giving grants to students who go to schools abroad. That makes no sense.”
“Mr. Speaker, my hon. friend has a difficult job. He has to defend whatever nonsense lines of the government of the day. Here are the facts from Statistics Canada. In terms of job numbers, we are at a 29-year low in labour force participation. We can check the Statistics Canada job numbers to confirm that. A big part of the solution to that would be to train Canadian young people to fill Canadian jobs and to pursue strong alignment between what businesses are actually looking for in skills and what is being made available to young people in skills development, to train young Canadian people for Canadian jobs. Rather than support vocational institutions that are at the front lines of doing this, the government made the arbitrary decision to cut off student grants to those students and then the minister viciously attacked those institutions on the floor of the House. Right now, under the government, a Canadian student can get a grant to study in a foreign institution. They cannot get that grant to study those labour market skills at a career college right here in Canada. How does that make any sense?”
