“We are taking urgent action to end the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQIA+ people. Almost three-quarters of the calls for justice that involve the federal government are started or underway. We are funding emergency alerts, more shelters and housing, and services led by Indigenous communities.”
“Mr. Speaker, I agree with the member opposite that the issue requires urgency and sustained effort. The crisis of missing and murdered indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQIA people demands urgent and sustained action, and we remain firmly committed to ending it. Of the 231 calls for justice, 215 are directly related to the federal government in some capacity, and we are acting on that responsibility. As I have said, almost three-quarters have been started and are in progress. We are making targeted investments that translate into real support, safe places to go, and culturally informed care and services identified by communities themselves. This includes support for indigenous-led organizations, further investments in a red dress alert pilot and expanding shelters and transitional housing across the country. Everything we are doing is built on working together, being accountable and following the leadership of indigenous partners.”
