“I agree that we must protect children online. The current situation is not good enough. However, I have questions about how this bill is set up and if it will actually work. I want a committee to study it closely and make changes to fix these problems.”
“Madam Speaker, genuinely, it is always a challenge when we are asked to rule on the objectives of a bill. I agree with the stated objectives. If a stated objective is to protect children, I agree with protecting children. I have a lot of questions about the architecture of the bill and whether it achieves its objectives. I look forward to the study that is going to happen at committee. I hope we have a detailed and robust study. I hope we are able to see amendments to address some of the issues around the architecture. I think action is required to protect kids online. The status quo is not acceptable. We need new robust responses by government to this challenge. I hope that through the process of debate, refinement and amendment, we can get to a piece of legislation that answers all the questions that I and other members have and achieves the objective that we are all saying we want.”
