“A full ban on social media will not work. Instead, this bill makes companies prove their platforms are safe. Young people can only use the platforms that meet our safety rules.”
“Mr. Speaker, this bill is different from what took place in Australia. In Australia, there was a complete ban. I think this bill is a realistic approach. We are not going to be able to just ban social media. It is not going to work. We are attempting to work with platforms to ensure that they put in place the right type of safeguards, and the onus is going to be on them to prove they are safe. If they are approved, then they will be open for young people to use. If they cannot reach those specific guidelines or safeguards, they will not be able to present their social media for use with young people in Canada.”
