“Liberals claim that anyone who opposes this bill is putting vulnerable people at risk. But Conservatives already tried to permanently stop assisted dying for mental illness, and the Liberals voted against it. Why is the government forcing us to expand assisted dying just to protect people with mental illness, instead of dealing with these two issues separately?”

Madam Speaker, we have heard the Liberals argue that anyone who does not support this bill is putting vulnerable Canadians at risk, but Conservatives have already put forward legislation to permanently exclude mental illness, and the Liberals voted against it. Could my colleague explain why the government is now insisting that protecting Canadians struggling with mental illness must come at the price of expanding assisted dying, when Parliament could deal with these two issues separately?
