Fisheries and Oceans

During question period on fisheries, Conservative member Clifford Small asked why the Prime Minister allowed France to announce a 1,500-metric-ton snow crab quota on Canada’s continental shelf shortly after meeting with the Prime Minister, saying Canadian crab would be caught by French fishers. Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson replied that fisheries decisions are made locally based on science, consultation with harvesters, and economic opportunity, that other departments handle international discussions, and that she met with fishers from Saint-Pierre and Miquelon over the summer and agreed to work together.Written by AI from the debate. Joanne Thompson, Minister of Fisheries

Liberal
“We make fisheries decisions using science, talks with fishers, and economic needs. Other departments help with international talks. I met with fishers in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon this summer, and we agreed to work together.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, I welcome the member back after the summer and certainly look forward to working with him and the fisheries committee. I want to remind the member that we make decisions locally based on science, consultation with harvesters and economic opportunities. We make decisions in the international space with other departments that are part of broader negotiations. I was in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon this summer, and I met with harvesters. I spent three days in the community, and we have agreed to work collaboratively going forward.
