“The United States has banned Canadian alcohol, so our wine industry needs federal help. The government should renew its support program for wineries, stop raising taxes on alcohol, and pass this bill so Canadians can order drinks by mail from other provinces.”
Official Hansard

Madam Speaker, in a time of uncertainty and new challenges from President Trump’s latest ban on Canadian wine, beer and spirits, Canada’s wine industry needs assurance that the Government of Canada is doing everything it can to support it. Sadly, the Liberals still have not renewed the vitally important wine sector support program, which is needed now more than ever. Conservatives are also calling on the government to immediately pause the federal excise tax on alcohol and to suspend the escalator tax, which continues to increase the cost for Canadian producers and consumers. The government should also quickly adopt my Conservative colleague’s Bill C-262, which would allow Canadians to purchase Canadian beer, wine and spirits from anywhere in this country through Canada Post. It simply makes common sense. If trade barriers are going to be put up abroad, we need to be tearing them down here at home. Canadian wineries and grape growers need our federal support more than ever.
