Finance

During Question Period on finance, the Conservatives said the government is spending too much, pointing to a projected deficit they said would be $7 billion larger than the Prime Minister had promised, and interest costs on the debt they put at about $6,000 for an average family of four. The government replied that the economy is performing well, citing 217,000 jobs created over the past year, the fastest growth in the G7 in the second quarter, the lowest debt-to-GDP ratio in the G7, and a rise in business investment, and invited the opposition to work with it on building the economy.Written by AI from the debate. “The government is spending too much money. Next year's deficit will be $7 billion higher than promised, and paying interest on the national debt will cost an average family of four $6,000. I want the Prime Minister to explain why he is doing this.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, Canadians are out of money while that minister and the Liberal government are out of touch. They are costing Canadians more. Just yesterday, the Parliamentary Budget Officer realized that the deficit next year will be $7 billion, or 11% bigger than the Prime Minister promised just in the spring. The fastest-growing expenditure is interest on the national debt. The average family of four will spend $6,000 on interest for the debt. Why is the Prime Minister forcing Canadians to feed debt interest instead of feeding their families?

Evan Solomon, Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario

“Our economy is doing well. In the last year, we added 217,000 jobs, our economy grew faster than any other G7 country, and we have the lowest debt compared to the size of our economy in the G7. The Conservatives should stop talking down our country and help us build it up.”

Mr. Speaker, in the last 12 months, 217,000 jobs were created, with 156,000 in the private sector alone. There was 3.3% growth in Q2, which is the fastest in the G7. We have the lowest debt-to-GDP ratio in the G7. Business investment grew in Q2 by 8.9%. I know these are inconvenient facts for the opposition, who, for once, should stop talking down the country and join us to build it up, build strong, build right and build Canadian. They have to try it.
