The Environment

During oral questions on the environment, the Bloc Québécois criticized Bill C-39, the Building Canada Strong Act, arguing that the government is using the tariff crisis to push through permanent measures that favour oil companies, and noted that a group of scientists has warned the bill could cause lasting environmental harm. The Liberal response said the bill does not lower environmental standards, that the duty to consult First Nations remains central and should be strengthened, and that the bill is aimed at building the country with Canadian workers.Written by AI from the debate. “The Liberals are using a tariff crisis to push through permanent rules that help oil companies. Fifty-six top scientists warned that this bill will cause permanent environmental harm. Will the government stop this bill?”
Official Hansard

Madam Speaker, with Bill C-39, the Liberals are acting as if it were the environment, endangered species, workers, and indigenous peoples who are preventing them from resolving the tariff crisis. They are taking people for fools. Essentially, what they are doing is exploiting the tariff crisis to make permanent changes that benefit the oil companies. The environmental consequences will also be permanent. Fifty-six of Canada’s most eminent scientists addressed this in a letter yesterday. With Bill C-39, the Liberals will cause costly and irreversible damage. Will they reverse course?
