George Massey Crossing

A member’s statement about the George Massey crossing between Delta and Richmond, British Columbia. Dan Albas, a Conservative, said commuters, families and truckers face long delays at what he called a bottleneck on an important trade corridor, and asked the government to keep its promised $3 billion for a new crossing and meet a December 1 deadline. He noted the province recently elected a government that wants to build a 10-lane bridge, and said the federal money was promised to people rather than to a specific party or design.Written by AI from the debate. “I want the government to keep its promise to provide $3 billion for a new George Massey crossing. People in British Columbia have waited too long in traffic. The province just elected a new Conservative government that wants to build a 10-lane bridge. That money was promised to the people, not to a specific party or design, and the government must meet the December 1 deadline.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, British Columbians have waited long enough for a new George Massey crossing. For commuters travelling between Delta and Richmond, families heading for the ferry and truckers moving goods through one of Canada’s most important trade corridors, the Massey bottleneck means more time sitting in traffic. This summer, the Liberal government committed up to $3 billion to replace this aging crossing. Last week, British Columbians voted for change. They elected a new Conservative government, and premier-designate Lorne Doerkson has committed to building a new, 10-lane George Massey bridge. With a December 1 funding deadline approaching, there is no excuse for uncertainty. That $3 billion was promised to British Columbians, not to the NDP and not to one particular design. This crossing matters to commuters, our Pacific gateway and getting goods to market. The election changed the government. It did not change the traffic, the trade bottleneck or the need for a new crossing. British Columbians have spent enough time waiting in traffic and waiting on governments. Let us respect their vote, honour the $3-billion commitment and get this built.
