The Economy

Question Period exchange on the economy. The Conservative leader said rising food costs are forcing many Canadians to skip meals and draw down savings, and asked whether the upcoming budget would help them afford necessities. The government pointed to its Major Projects Office and listed jobs connected to projects in Montreal, graphite production, and Darlington and Pickering, and invited the opposition to support that work.Written by AI from the debate. “The government helps powerful insiders while regular people cannot afford food. One in three Canadians is skipping meals because groceries cost too much. Half of young people are skipping meals, and half of all Canadians are using their savings to pay bills. Will the budget on Thursday save people money so they can afford to eat?”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, I have no doubt that corporate power brokers would simultaneously like to get a paycheque from a company and go work for the regulator that approves that company’s applications. It is too bad that kind of arrangement does not work out for single moms, seniors and small business owners who cannot afford to eat. One in three Canadians is skipping meals, according to the Salvation Army today, because they cannot afford groceries. Nearly half of young people fall into that category, and 50% of Canadians are digging into their savings to pay their bills. Will Canadians at least get a budget on Thursday that will save them money so they can afford to eat?

“Our major projects office is creating tens of thousands of jobs so Canadians can feed their families. I want the Leader of the Opposition to support this work.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, I remember when the Conservative Party actually used to care about jobs. Let us talk about what the Major Projects Office is doing: 8,000 new jobs at the port of Montreal, 1,000 new jobs at Nouveau Monde Graphite, 10,000 new jobs at Darlington and 18,000 jobs at Pickering. Why does the Leader of the Opposition not support the hard work of the MPO, which is creating jobs where men and women can work hard and feed their family in this country?
