Persons with Disabilities

In a member’s statement on persons with disabilities, Leslie Church marked the 40th anniversary of Rick Hansen’s Man in Motion world tour, in which he travelled 40,000 kilometres across 34 countries to change how people view disability. She noted that the Rick Hansen Foundation continues its work removing barriers, that Hansen would attend a film screening on Parliament Hill that evening, and said Canada should continue working toward full accessibility.Written by AI from the debate. “Forty years ago, Rick Hansen wheeled around the world to change how we see disability. Tonight, we are welcoming him to Parliament Hill to watch a film about his journey. His foundation still works to remove barriers, and we should keep working to make Canada fully accessible.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, Rick Hansen turned an extraordinary journey 40 years ago into a movement that changed Canada and the world: over 26 months, 34 countries and 40,000 kilometres, powered by his own physical strength and the strength of his belief. He challenged all of us to think bigger about disability, about opportunity and about the country we can build together. Tonight we welcome this great Canadian to Ottawa for a screening of Man in Motion: The Rick Hansen Story right here on Parliament Hill. Four decades on, the Rick Hansen Foundation’s work continues to break down barriers, champion accessibility and open doors. Rick’s example calls on members of the House to build a Canada where everyone can participate, contribute and belong. We thank Rick for helping Canada dream bigger and for shattering what we thought were the limits of disability. His journey around the world may have ended, but what he set in motion never will.
