Artificial Intelligence

During Question Period, members asked about artificial intelligence in schools. A Liberal member said teachers need help figuring out how to use AI well and asked how the government’s new free bilingual AI literacy training, starting that week, would help students and teachers. The minister replied that the government’s AI strategy rests on trust, opportunity and sovereign control, and pointed to the free bilingual training program as a way for young Canadians to learn to use AI safely.Written by AI from the debate. “AI is in schools now, and teachers need help using it well. Free training for students and teachers starts this week. I want the minister to explain how this helps them.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, AI has become part of everyday life in schools, and teachers are still figuring out what good use of it looks like. What they have asked for is straightforward: a common starting point and something they can trust. This week, free bilingual AI literacy training becomes available to students and educators across the country. Can the Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation tell the House how this will help teachers and young Canadians?

“We launched a free, bilingual program to teach students and teachers about artificial intelligence. Young Canadians need to know how to use AI safely. I urge students and teachers across the country to use it.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, I want to thank my colleague for his advocacy and his great work. Our AI for all strategy is based on three pillars: trust, opportunity and sovereign control. To trust, young Canadians need to know how to use AI, and they need to create the opportunities to use it safely. That is why I am so happy to announce that we have launched Canada’s AI essentials national literacy program for students and educators, a free bilingual program for students across the country. I urge students and teachers to use it. We are building strong, building right and building Canadian.
