Mr. Speaker, I rise today to commemorate the life of UBC student Kai Smart, whom I worked with on fundraising for mental health. On March 20, at the age of 23, Kai tragically lost his life in an avalanche in Japan. I would like to share some words written by Kai's parents, John and Julia, who said Kai was a mountain man, an explorer of the world and a lover of people from all walks of life. He was an avid skier and adventurer. In his short life, he experienced more than many do in a lifetime. What stood out about Kai was how he moved through the world. He connected with people across borders, languages and cultures. He carried curiosity, courage, kindness and humility wherever he went, making others feel welcome, inspired and more alive. “Live like Kai” has emerged as a mantra in the mountain community he called home. In his memory, the Smart family is establishing a memorial fund to support young people making a positive impact. Rest in peace, Kai.

“I'm wearing a vyshyvanka shirt today. It's a Ukrainian tradition. Many Canadians came from Ukraine. My grandfather did. Canada is welcoming. Ukraine is fighting a war. I support Ukraine.”

Mr. Speaker, today many of us in this chamber wear a vyshyvanka, a symbol of Ukrainian heritage and resilience that has endured through some of history’s darkest moments. For Ukrainian Canadians, these embroidered shirts carry identity and the stories of generations who held on to their culture through hardship and persecution. Canada is home to one of the largest Ukrainian communities in the world outside Ukraine. For more than a century, Ukrainian Canadians have helped shape our country. These roots also exist in my own family. My grandfather came from Ukraine after his family endured persecution under Stalin's regime. He came to Canada in search of freedom and opportunity, and he was always grateful to live in such a welcoming country that allowed him to give back to the next generations. Today, as Ukraine continues to defend its sovereignty and democracy, Canadians stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian people. To those celebrating, I wish them a happy Vyshyvanka Day. Slava Ukraini.

Mr. Speaker, today I rise to mark one year since I was first elected as one of the youngest members of Parliament, born in the 21st century, to serve the people of New Westminster—Burnaby—Maillardville. This has been a year of collaboration, listening, learning and showing up for my community, and it is an honour of a lifetime. In my riding, I have had the privilege of working closely with families, local organizations and, especially, young people. From helping constituents who are navigating federal services to advancing priorities such as reducing the cost of living, my work this year has been grounded in service. I constantly hear about the challenges facing youth, particularly mental health challenges. That is why I have been proud to support the building safer communities fund. It will ensure people feel supported and that they are not alone. This year, $1.25 million in federal funding will help nearly 250 young people gain real experience right in my community. This work has been guided by the leadership of the Prime Minister, whose vision continues to inspire us to deliver for Canadians. We are one year in, and this is only the beginning.
