“I want to honour Charles Novogrodsky, who has died. He moved from the United States to Toronto in the 1960s and spent his life working for human rights and his community. I send my condolences to his family and friends.”
“Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honour the beautiful life of Charles Novogrodsky. Charlie and his wife Myra came from the U.S. as war resisters in the 1960s and fell in love with multicultural Toronto, where they could be rooted in their Jewish identity and engaged with the incredible diversity of languages, cultures, sports and foods embraced by their neighbours. Charlie’s lifelong commitment to human rights, social justice and community service included his leadership at the Toronto Board of Education and the Miles Nadal JCC, the co-founding of Amistad Canada, and his work as a consultant on human rights and equity. Charlie was a gentle soul with a twinkle in his eye who never stopped learning. He will be deeply missed by Myra, their sons Noah and Tobias, their grandchildren and the community they built together, of which I feel privileged to be a part. May his memory be a blessing.”
