David McGuinty

Replying to James Bezan (Conservative)
“Mr. Speaker, the Prime Minister got elected on the promise that he could do a deal with Trump. Instead of getting the deal done, the Prime Minister has been playing political theatre. First, he called six by-elections. Then he called Trump. All the while, the ongoing trade war is hurting rural manufacturers and farmers. Costs are going up, revenues are going down, and life is more unaffordable. The Prime Minister continues to use defence as a political pawn, which is making our military less capable and Canada more vulnerable. The Prime Minister has been in office 599 days. When will he finally get the deal he promised?”

Mr. Speaker, Canada is proudly rearming, rebuilding and reinvesting in the Canadian Armed Forces. The member is aware of this. We have met the NATO 2% target five years ahead of schedule and accelerated our investments to put Canada on a path to meet our new target. He is aware of that as well. Canada’s defence industry is a major contributor to our economy, generating more than $17 billion in annual revenues and supporting over 81,000 jobs across the country. Now more than ever, we need to be united in this House. We need to reaffirm Canadian sovereignty by strengthening our military. This is exactly what we are doing.
