Replying to Guillaume Deschênes-Thériault (Liberal)
“Mr. Speaker, through Bill C-41, we are establishing a framework that would allow people living with conditions such as Alzheimer’s to make a free and informed decision about their end-of-life care while they are still capable of doing so. This decision was not taken lightly. We heard deeply moving testimony from many individuals living with these conditions, and they expressed a desire to be able to make that choice while they still have capacity. I would like to ask my colleague this: What does he say to those individuals who came forward to give testimony and who are asking for the right to make that choice?”

Mr. Speaker, it is quite simple. I would like to thank the member across the way for the question, because it is important. This issue is a matter of conscience, and we all have different perspectives on it, which is quite evident, but it comes down to the point that I made earlier that this is a final decision. If we get it wrong and we cannot communicate properly and evidence the refusal at the last moment, we cannot risk making a mistake in this case.
