Replying to Marie-Hélène Gaudreau (Bloc Québécois)
“Mr. Speaker, I am outraged this evening. We have the right to have different opinions. We have the right to hold certain beliefs and to disregard general statements or science. However, what we do not have the right to do is to disregard human dignity. I am hearing so much oversimplification right now. I am not saying that what I went through with my father, who had ALS, is right for everyone. That is not the case. We are asking if we can let people make their own end-of-life choices with dignity.”

Mr. Speaker, it is important. This is extraordinarily contentious. It is absolutely a matter of conscience. We have different perspectives, but this transcends that. The role of the House of Commons transcends the individual opinion, in that we have to err on the side of caution until we collectively understand the impact. We cannot take the risk of making a mistake. We cannot take the risk of not understanding the context. Science and the perception and reality of all of the things we study change over time. They are always a moving target. In this instance with this legislation, the consequences are literally fatal, and we cannot take the risk of making a mistake.
