Replying to Jenny Kwan (NDP)
“Mr. Speaker, the bill would give the government the power to establish administrative monetary penalties for health IT vendors that do not comply. I wonder what would stop these penalties from simply being another cost of doing business. How can we ensure that the penalties are strong enough to actually deter data blocking?”

Mr. Speaker, these are the questions we will have to bring up at committee, absolutely. How are we going to prevent data blocking? What regulations are going to be put in place? How would we ensure that it would not just be the conglomerates that are able to play in this game anymore? We have to make sure the start-ups, the innovation and the free market can still compete in this area at the same time as we hold regulators accountable to make sure they are sharing that information.
