“Fishing is very important to Newfoundland and Labrador. High fuel costs hurt fishers by cutting their profits. Because of these costs, they cannot buy new equipment, hire more workers, or grow their businesses.”
“Mr. Speaker, yes, the fishing industry is extremely important to Newfoundland and Labrador. The food fishery is another component of Newfoundland and Labrador that is extremely important. These are costs that are directly impacting these operations. Ultimately, that means that fishers cannot hire more people for their operations to expand the fishing industry. They cannot invest in new equipment. It has direct impacts, as it diminishes their profit margins. It also inhibits them from investing and growing their operations and providing more opportunities in a vital and extremely important part of our economy in Newfoundland and Labrador.”
