“Some online platforms have already started making changes to protect young people. Fines will help make sure they follow the rules. Being held legally responsible and protecting their reputation will also push them to do the right thing.”

Madam Speaker, that is an excellent question from my esteemed colleague. Over the past few months, we have witnessed a number of high-profile disputes involving online platforms. In response, many of these platforms have already begun voluntarily introducing the sort of environment we want for our young people. Financial penalties will certainly be a further asset. However, beyond financial penalties, there is also the question of a platform’s liability and reputational damage. We know this now: Our young people are capable of making choices, and they do exercise those choices.
