“We must keep health data secure, but doctors across Canada also need to be able to see it. If a doctor in another province cannot see a sick patient's medical records, it wastes time and puts the patient's life at risk.”
“Mr. Speaker, my colleague is right to emphasize the importance of security in data sharing. His remarks were very eloquent. We also need to recognize the importance of making the data accessible across Canada. For example, I could get sick on a trip to Edmonton. If the doctor who cares for me in Edmonton is unable to access important personal data to save my life, that is a problem for me. I could be a student in Gatineau who lives in Ottawa. I could get sick in Gatineau and may have to be moved to a hospital in Ottawa to be able to access my medical data so that the doctor can treat me. That is a waste of time, and it could also put my health at risk. Connectivity to support nationwide data sharing is also very important.”
