Foreign Affairs

During question period on foreign affairs, Adam Chambers of the Conservatives asked why the government had recalled MPs from a delegation to Taiwan, left a finalized trade co-operation framework with Taiwan unsigned for over a year, and added flights from China while Taiwan awaited more flights, saying the government was overlooking a democratic ally. Minister Anita Anand replied that the member was not accurately reflecting the government’s position, said Taiwan is an important economic partner with strong people-to-people ties, and said Canada will keep working with Taiwan as it seeks to double trade with countries outside the United States over the next ten years.Written by AI from the debate. “The Prime Minister recalled MPs from Taiwan, delayed signing a trade agreement with Taiwan, and blocked more flights from Taiwan while adding new flights from China. I want to know why the government is ignoring a democratic ally like Taiwan to get closer to China.”

Mr. Speaker, the Prime Minister recently recalled MPs from a trip, a delegation, to Taiwan. He has been sitting on, for over a year, an updated and finalized trade co-operation framework arrangement with Taiwan. It is just awaiting his signature. Also, Taiwan has been patiently waiting for additional flights to operate to Canada, only to see the government recently fast-track and announce new flights with China. What does it say to our democratic allies around the world when the Liberal government stonewalls Taiwan in favour of getting closer to an autocratic Beijing?

Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs

Liberal
“Our relationship with Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific region is important. Taiwan is a key trading partner, and we want to keep working with them as we try to double our trade with countries outside the United States over the next 10 years.”

Actually, Mr. Speaker, the member opposite is not accurately reflecting the importance we place on the Indo-Pacific region in general, including Taiwan, which is an important economic partner. We enjoy strong people-to-people ties with Taiwan, and we will continue to ensure that Taiwan continues to be an important economic partner for this country as we diversify trade and double non-U.S. trade over the next 10 years.
