Government Orders

Build Canada Homes Act

A bill to create a new federal Crown corporation called Build Canada Homes, with the goal of rapidly building more affordable housing. The Liberals spoke in favor, arguing a new flexible entity is needed to get housing built faster. The Bloc expressed tentative support but questioned why the existing CMHC couldn't do this role. The Conservatives argued the bill creates unnecessary bureaucracy when faster private sector solutions are needed. Members spent some time discussing skilled trades training and collaborating with provinces.

“I want to look like I care about housing. But I don't want to just cheer for this bill. I need to find something to pick at. So I'll pick on how this new thing is too much like an old thing we already have. Why are you making a new one? What's wrong with the old one?”

“I want to look smart by showing off my knowledge about CMHC. I don't understand how this new housing program will work. The government should explain it better.”

“I support the bill. But it adds complexity. My riding has projects that need money. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation was supposed to give the money. Now we wait for Build Canada Homes. We haven't heard back. The money was due years ago. There has been delay. Now there is another new layer. The government rushed this. Do you have any examples in your riding?”

“I don't like this plan because it mixes up roles. I want you to say that too.”
