Climate Change

During Question Period on climate change, Bloc Québécois members cited a Natural Resources warning that wildfire activity will increase this summer, and said 300 mayors are calling on the federal government to abandon new pipelines. They asked why the government still promotes oil sands and oil exports when forested communities face fire risk. Liberal ministers replied that the government is fighting climate change, citing strengthened methane regulations, a plan to protect 30% of lands and waters by 2030, and renewable energy growth, and said the Bloc votes against the government’s plans instead of supporting them.Written by AI from the debate. “Wildfires will get worse this summer, and 300 mayors want the government to stop building pipelines. I want the government to stop supporting oil.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, the Department of Natural Resources warned on Thursday that wildfire activity will increase throughout the summer. With hot temperatures expected, 300 mayors are calling on the federal government to abandon its plans for new pipelines, stating in their declaration that more communities are likely to burn to the ground this summer as we double down on fossil fuel expansion. As another wildfire season approaches, will the Liberals finally drop their obsession with oil?

Sébastien Lemire, Abitibi—Témiscamingue

Bloc Québécois
“Wildfires will be bad again this summer, but the natural resources minister is still promoting the oil sands and oil exports. I want to know if the government cares more about oil profits than the safety of forested areas.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, the Department of Natural Resources announced on Thursday that we are facing another bad summer for wildfires. However, that is not apparent from listening to the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. Two days earlier, he was at an energy trade show in Calgary, calling the oil sands one of the great industrial achievements in Canadian history. He was boasting about speeding up oil and gas exports at the very same time as his own department was warning that our regions are going to burn. Do the Liberals not think that the safety of forested regions should come before oil sands profits?
