Public Safety

During question period on public safety, Conservative MP Todd Doherty said Liberal crime and mental health policies have led to deliberately set fires, prolific offenders being quickly released, and businesses closing in Prince George, and invited the Prime Minister to visit the city. Parliamentary Secretary Ruby Sahota replied that the Conservatives have not supported the government’s bail and sentencing reform legislation, which she said would toughen sentences and give police more tools, and urged the party to help pass it.Written by AI from the debate. “Liberal crime and mental health policies have caused fires, crime, and business closures in Prince George. I want the Prime Minister to visit the city and explain these policies to local business owners.”

Mr. Speaker, $38 million spent, 1,000 deliberately set fires in just four years and businesses closing and leaving town are the true devastating costs of Liberal catch-and-release and mental health policies in the city of Prince George. Prolific offenders are arrested and released the very same day. Homelessness, addiction and crime have turned our communities into war zones. That is the reality, and that is the Liberal government’s legacy. Members of the Prince George city council are here in Ottawa today. Will the Prime Minister accept their invite to come to Prince George to tell our business owners directly to their faces why he believes they should give his catch-and-release policies another chance?

Ruby Sahota, Secretary of State (Combatting Crime)

Liberal
“The Conservatives have not helped us pass our bill to make sentences tougher and give police the tools they need. They have been blocking it for months. They need to help police arrest and charge criminals.”

Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, I think the members of the business council should also be informed that the Conservative Party of Canada did nothing to assist in our bail and sentencing reform bill. If anything, it has impeded our ability to progress in making changes to the Criminal Code of Canada to make sentences harder and to make sure we give police the tools they need through Bill C-22. They have been blocking it for months now, and they need to help law enforcement so its members can arrest and charge criminals.
