Public Safety

During Question Period, the Conservative leader raised a shooting at a synagogue in Belleville that took place on Yom Kippur, noting that congregants had to take cover and that a police officer was injured while protecting them, and asked the Prime Minister to join in supporting the officer and the Jewish community and to speak out against violence. The Prime Minister responded with condolences for the officer, his family, and Jewish communities in Belleville and across Canada, said the government stands against all violence and hate, and called for unity in keeping Canadians safe.Written by AI from the debate. “Someone shot at a synagogue in Belleville last night, and a police officer was hurt protecting the people inside. Jewish people should be able to practice their faith in peace. I want the Prime Minister to join me in supporting this officer and the Jewish community, and in speaking out against violence.”

Mr. Speaker, yesterday night on Yom Kippur, the holiest night in Judaism, gunfire erupted at a synagogue in Belleville. Congregants of Sons of Jacob were forced to take cover, and a courageous constable, Jeff Smith, was injured while saving countless lives. The Jewish people deserve to live in peace and freedom as they express their faith. Will the Prime Minister join with me in offering prayers and love for this courageous constable and support for the Jewish community and condemn all forms of violence?

“I share my sympathies with Officer Smith, his family, and Jewish people in Belleville and across Canada. We stand against all violence and hate. We must stay united to support Jewish Canadians and keep all Canadians safe.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, I join with the Leader of the Opposition and all members of this House in offering our thoughts and prayers for officer Smith, for his family, for the Jewish community in Belleville and for the Jewish community across Canada. We stand against all forms of violence, all forms of hate, and may this House continue to come together to support the Jewish community in Canada and all Canadians to live their full lives.
