Justice

During question period on justice, Conservative MP Arpan Khanna asked the minister to permanently stop a prison program that supplies paper straws, saying inmates could use them to snort drugs, and raised the case of a convicted child killer receiving escorted outings. Liberal minister Gary Anandasangaree replied that he had already answered the question, said the Parole Board had postponed the decision in question, honoured the memory of Heather Thomas, and said the government wants to protect victims and strengthen the justice system, inviting the opposition to work with it on improving the laws.Written by AI from the debate. “Prisons are giving paper straws to inmates to snort cocaine. Illegal drugs are hurting our streets and our prisons. I want the minister to permanently stop this program today.”

Mr. Speaker, first the minister approves it, then he gets caught and now he says they have paused it. Under the Liberals, convicted child killers are getting released for cooking classes, and now we have these guys handing out paper straws to prisoners to snort coke. The system is a complete joke. Our streets, our parks and our downtown areas are being destroyed by drugs and disorder. There should be zero tolerance for illegal drugs in our streets and in prison. Will the minister stand up today and finally end it completely, yes or no?

“I already answered this question. The Parole Board postponed the decision being talked about. I want to honor the memory of Heather Thomas and support her family. Our government wants to protect victims and make the justice system stronger. I want the opposition to work with us to improve our laws.”

Mr. Speaker, I believe I have answered this question, but let me just address the second issue that came up. I want to take a moment to remember Heather Thomas, who was 10 years old when she was killed. My thoughts are with the family of the loved one. I understand that the Parole Board has decided to postpone the decision that my friend opposite is referring to. Our government is committed to strengthening our criminal justice system and protecting victims’ rights. That is what we will continue to do. We are looking for collaboration from the other side in order to make constructive criminal justice reforms.
