Employment

In Question Period on employment, the Conservatives pointed to recent job losses reported by Statistics Canada, citing roughly 70,000 jobs lost in September and 42,000 in August, a rising unemployment rate described as the second highest in the G7, declining real wages, and asked whether the Prime Minister takes responsibility. The government said it is helping Canadians with the cost of living through tax cuts and affordability measures such as a groceries and essentials benefit, home repair help, and school food funding, and said that in a challenging trade war it is building major projects, including small modular reactors at Darlington, to create jobs, and asked the Conservatives to support that plan.Written by AI from the debate. Madam Speaker, as we head into Thanksgiving, the latest StatsCan jobs report is in, and the numbers are devastating: nearly 70,000 jobs lost in September. That is on top of the 42,000 jobs lost in August. Unemployment is up, and Canada has the second-highest unemployment rate in the G7. In the face of these dismal jobs numbers, does the Prime Minister take any responsibility?

“Thousands of Canadians lost their jobs recently, and wages are falling. The Prime Minister promised a strong economy. I want him to admit that his words do not match reality.”
  • A repeated line

“The Prime Minister promised the fastest-growing economy in the G7.”

Madam Speaker, 110,000 Canadians have been out of work in just the past 60 days. We have the second-highest unemployment rate in the G7, with the worst labour participation rate in 30 years. Meanwhile, real wages continue to decline. That is the Prime Minister’s record. The Prime Minister promised the strongest economy in the G7, so will he acknowledge that once again his rhetoric does not match reality?
