The Economy

Question period focused on the cost of living, particularly rising food prices. Conservative members cited a projected 10% increase in the cost of Thanksgiving dinner, a 30% rise in grocery prices since 2021, recent job losses, and pressure on local food banks — including one in Oshawa capping the number of households it serves — and asked the government to acknowledge an affordability crisis and adopt their measures, such as cutting fuel taxes. Liberal members responded by pointing to their affordability measures, including the groceries and essentials benefit recently paid to tens of thousands of households, the permanent national school food program, the child benefit, rent declines they said had lasted 24 consecutive months, and housing investments such as $188 million for over 500 homes in Oshawa. One Liberal also cited the Canada Growth Fund’s investment in the Darlington nuclear project as supporting local jobs, which the local Conservative member disputed in her follow-up.Written by AI from the debate. “Supporting local jobs helps lower food costs. The member opposite and her party voted against a $2 billion nuclear project in Darlington. That project will create thousands of jobs so workers can earn good wages and afford their lives.”

Madam Speaker, what would lower food costs is if the member actually stood up and supported jobs in the Durham region. She and her party voted against the Canada Growth Fund, which invested $2 billion in the new nuclear project at Darlington, creating 18,000 construction jobs and 3,700 jobs in operations once the SMRs are in operation. That is significant support. That is how we build an affordable lifestyle. It is giving workers and young people chances to earn a good living and have wages outpace inflation. That is exactly—

Jennifer McKelvie, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Housing and Infrastructure

“Our government cares about making life affordable. Across Canada, rent has gone down for 24 months in a row. We are also spending $188 million to build 502 homes in Oshawa, which creates jobs and includes affordable housing.”

Madam Speaker, our government cares deeply about affordability, whether it be prices at the grocery store or rent. Indeed, we have seen across Canada, 24 months in a row, that rents have been coming down. We are also making historic investments in housing, including in Oshawa, in the member’s riding, where, with the help of the ACLP, we have invested $188 million to build 502 homes on the former foundry lands. These are homes for Canadians. We are also getting them to build those homes, which is creating jobs, and many of them will be affordable.

“Our government is helping families deal with high costs. Over 35,000 people in the member's riding got money for groceries this week. I want him to support our school food program, which feeds nearly 60,000 kids in Alberta.”
Official Hansard

Madam Speaker, earlier this week, over 35,000 constituents of the member across the way received the groceries and essentials benefit. That is an important support that we put in place to try to address the increased cost of living that we know families are experiencing. I would ask the member to go back to his riding and support the national school food program, because that program in Alberta is helping to put food on the table for kids going to school in 63 public school jurisdictions and is supporting close to 60,000 kids. Those are important measures.

Jill McKnight, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence

Liberal
“We know life is expensive right now, and we are helping people. We made school food programs permanent. We just sent out money for groceries, and our child benefit helps over 70,000 families on Vancouver Island alone.”

Madam Speaker, we know that British Columbians are facing affordability challenges right now, and we are working with Canadians to support them. That is why we made things, such as the national school food program, permanent. That is why we have the groceries and essentials benefit, which was paid into bank accounts on Monday. That is why we have the Canada child benefit. My colleague across the way is from Vancouver Island, where we know that over 70,000 families have received that benefit. It is important. These are the steps we are taking to support Canadians.
