Housing

During question period on housing, NDP MP Jenny Kwan said that building homes faster does not make them affordable, cited research that public housing returns about three dollars for every dollar invested, and asked the Prime Minister to keep his promise to double affordable, non-market housing in the next budget. Liberal MP Caroline Desrochers replied that the housing crisis developed over decades and that government programs, including MLI Select and the Apartment Construction Loan Program, had helped enable or protect hundreds of thousands of homes so far this year.Written by AI from the debate. NDP
“Building homes faster does not make them affordable. Public housing brings in three dollars for every dollar we spend on it. I want the Prime Minister to keep his promise and double the amount of affordable, non-market housing in the next budget.”
Official Hansard

Madam Speaker, the housing minister once had the ambition to end homelessness. The Prime Minister promised to build affordable housing at scale, and everyone knows building faster does not equal affordability. The Canadian Centre for Economic Analysis said public housing generates almost $3 in return on every dollar invested. Public housing is not charity, but productive infrastructure. It is good for the people and good for the economy. Will the Prime Minister make good on his promise to build affordable housing at scale and commit to doubling non-market housing stock in the upcoming budget?
