Question period dealt with the west coast oil tanker ban (Bill C-48). Conservative member David McKenzie said Alberta’s oil and gas sector is vital to the economy and asked the government to support his bill to lift the ban, pointing to a company proposal to ship 250,000 barrels a day by rail from Prince Rupert. Liberal member Corey Hogan replied that the ban, in place in some form since the 1980s, protects the north coast, and pointed to record oil and diesel production, a pipeline to the west coast, and 62,000 jobs added in Calgary this year. McKenzie pressed for the ban’s removal so Canada could export to more markets, and Hogan reiterated the government’s record and its balance between development and protection.Written by AI from the debate. “Alberta oil and gas is vital to our economy, but the government still bans oil tankers on the west coast. That ban does not protect the environment, because tankers still sail through those waters. I want the Prime Minister to support my bill to end the tanker ban.”

Madam Speaker, Alberta’s oil and gas industry is a critical component of our national economy. Despite all the press releases and announcements, the Liberal government still maintains the west coast tanker ban, Bill C-48. We know the tanker ban is not about protecting the environment, because it does not prevent the sailing of tankers through the waters supposedly protected by the ban. Will the Prime Minister support Bill C-264, which is my private member’s bill to repeal the west coast tanker ban, and get out of the way so our oil and gas—

“A Canadian company wants to ship 250,000 barrels of oil a day from Prince Rupert by rail. I want the Prime Minister to end the ban on oil tankers on the west coast so we can sell our oil to more places.”
Official Hansard

Madam Speaker, my constituents want action and not more words. Strathcona Resources, a Canadian success story, is proposing the export of 250,000 barrels a day of crude oil from Prince Rupert and can do so within two years with oil shipped by rail. The Prime Minister says Canada has to diversify and grow its export markets. Here is a golden opportunity. Will the Prime Minister stick to his word and repeal the west coast tanker ban so Canadian success stories like Strathcona can thrive?
