Safe Social Media Act

Bill C-34, Safe Social Media Act · Second reading · now at committee in the House Where it stands

What Bill C-34 would do

The bill would create the Digital Safety Act and set up the Digital Safety Commission of Canada to oversee it. Operators of regulated social media and chatbot services would have to mitigate exposure to harmful content, label synthetic content, and protect children through design features and age limits. Platforms would also have to remove non-consensual intimate content and child sexual abuse material, and submit digital safety plans to the commission.

“This bill is not the main issue people in my riding talk to me about. Parents who do talk to me worry about government overreach, and how these rules could affect everyone while trying to protect children.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, I have to admit this is not the major issue that I am hearing in my riding. There are a lot of concerns about everything today with regard to being in Alberta. We have had referendum issues, which have sucked all the energy out of the room for quite a while. Parents talk to me about what we are looking at in the future, but they are always concerned that if there is going to be overreach, how these restrictions are going to affect the rest of society versus the balancing act with regard to protecting our children.

“We want to protect children. We want to send this bill to committee so we can look at the details and get answers to our questions.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, the Conservatives are concerned about protecting children and getting this bill to committee to flesh out a lot of the details so that a lot of the questions we have will be answered and resolved going forward in this legislation.
