Families, Children and Social Development

During question period on families, children and social development, Garnett Genuis of the Conservatives highlighted his party’s proposal to let both parents simultaneously claim the CPP child-rearing dropout, so parents who share caregiving at home would not have their pensions reduced, and asked the government to include it in the next budget. Leslie Church of the Liberals replied that the government had delivered longer parental leave options, shared parental benefits, and support for working families, and cited the national child care program as saving some families more than $16,000 a year, which she said the member opposes.Written by AI from the debate. “I want the government to include our plan in the next budget. It lets both parents protect their pensions while staying home to care for their kids.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, I am very proud of the plans Conservatives have announced. Just today, we announced an exciting new idea to support families: allowing both parents to simultaneously claim the CPP child-rearing dropout. This means families who share caregiving responsibilities would no longer be penalized in the calculation of their pension eligibility. Parents should not have to choose between spending time with their kids and protecting their retirement. Will the finance minister include this constructive proposal in the upcoming budget?
