The debate focused on the current economic climate, specifically the impact of the Bank of Canada raising interest rates to 2.5%. Conservative MP Shelby Kramp-Neuman argued that this rate hike, combined with high energy costs, is placing increased pressure on Canadian families. She proposed that the government should reduce its expenditures and remove the carbon tax to help make energy more affordable.Written by AI from the debate. Updated .

“The Bank of Canada just raised interest rates, which hurts families. The government needs to spend less money and get rid of the carbon tax to make energy more affordable.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, yesterday the Bank of Canada raised interest rates to 2.5%, the first hike since July 2023, adding more pressure on Canadian families. The bank’s own press release warned of “the risk that continuing high energy prices spread broadly to the prices of other goods and services.” Governor Macklem also warned that further increases may be necessary. Canada is blessed with abundant energy resources. Our policies should reflect that advantage, not undermine it. Monetary policy cannot carry the burden of economic stability alone. As government spending increases, fiscal discipline and affordable energy must be central to the government’s policy, not casualties of it. The Prime Minister once understood price stability from the governor’s chair. It is now time to demonstrate that same understanding from the Prime Minister’s Office, exercise fiscal restraints and eliminate the industrial carbon tax.
