Fisheries and Oceans

A debate concerning fisheries funding occurred during Question Period, focusing on government subsidies and regional economic support. A Conservative member questioned the Fisheries Minister regarding a subsidy provided to a company that had reportedly laid off Canadian workers and hired undocumented labor, noting national struggles with unemployment. The Liberal MP responded that the Conservative criticism was based on a misunderstanding of a 2024 project, clarifying that the funding was for crab processing equipment rather than job creation. The Liberal MP concluded by noting that the government has funded over 1,300 projects in Atlantic Canada and intends to commit another $300 million to the region.Written by AI from the debate. “Canadians are struggling to find work. Yet the fisheries minister gave money to a company that fired Canadian workers and hired illegal workers instead. I want the minister to explain why.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, we are zero for one in terms of answering my questions. The Bank of Canada is now confirming that it is harder than ever for unemployed Canadians to find work, as we have now hit a 29-year low in labour force participation. Meanwhile, the fisheries minister saw no problem with subsidizing a company that fired Canadians to hire illegal workers. The Liberals put the shellfish interests of this foreign company ahead of Canadian workers. Will the fisheries minister finally stand up and explain why they subsidized the company that fired Canadians to hire illegal workers?
