Housing

Question period took up the topic of housing. The NDP asked the government to make community housing a national priority and to spend more on building one million non-market homes, saying the government showed more ambition on a pipeline than on housing while Canadians face high interest rates and housing costs. The Liberal response said the government has been working with provinces to cut red tape and fees, lowered the GST for first-time homebuyers, and invested in infrastructure, and that rents have fallen and construction is up in several cities.Written by AI from the debate. “Our work over the past year is making housing more affordable. We cut red tape and fees with the provinces, lowered the GST for first-time buyers, and funded infrastructure to build more homes. Because of this, rent has dropped for 24 months in a row, and new home construction is up in Vancouver, Montreal, and Saskatchewan.”

Rent prices are down 24 months in a row. PwC says optimism in housing is back. According to Canadian real estate, housing starts are up in Vancouver and Montreal and, listen to this, up 65% in Saskatchewan—
