Publics Services and Procurement

Question period focused on government contracts with Telesat and the Prime Minister’s friendship with the company’s CEO. Pierre Poilievre said ethics rules make it illegal for the Prime Minister to help a friend make money, and asked whether the Prime Minister ever discussed Telesat’s contracts with his staff or anyone in government. Mélanie Joly responded that the government supports Telesat to protect Canadian jobs and sovereignty during the American trade war, noting that past governments of both parties have also supported the company, and asked whether the opposition would prefer an American company instead.Written by AI from the debate. “Conservatives do not talk about American tariffs. We are dealing with this trade war by protecting Canadian companies like Telesat. Canada needs to control its own satellites to stay independent.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, in the House, there are two philosophies that are contradicting themselves. First, the Conservatives are never talking about the American tariffs. Then there is us dealing with the impacts of a trade war, knowing that Canadian companies are key to our sovereignty and the protection of our people. That is Telesat. That is a company we need to protect. Why? It is because we need to have sovereign capability when it comes to satellites in this country.

“We support Telesat because it protects thousands of Canadian jobs. Past governments have supported it too. I want to know if the opposition would rather use an American company instead.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, it has been constant industrial policy for decades now to support being able to have companies operating telecommunication and satellite services. The Harper government, the Trudeau government and this government have all supported Telesat. We believe that thousands of jobs in this country are linked to the company. I would like to know what the Leader of the Opposition suggests. Is it more Telesat, or more of an American company?
