The Budget

During question period, members raised Budget 2026. Jenny Kwan of the NDP said the budget includes $36 billion in tax deductions for large corporations while everyday people get only a small grocery benefit that rising food prices would erase, and she asked that the money instead go toward building public grocery stores to lower prices. Caroline Desrochers of the Liberals said the budget invests in helping Canadians, including through Build Canada Homes for affordable and transitional housing, a commitment to end homelessness within ten years, and funding for mental health and addiction care.Written by AI from the debate. “The budget gives $36 billion in tax breaks to big corporations, but rising food prices will wipe out the small grocery benefit for regular people. I want the Prime Minister to use that $36 billion to build public grocery stores to lower prices.”

Mr. Speaker, what we are is award-winning. Not only are the Liberals selling airports and our public assets, but Christmas came early for billionaires and corporate executives. Budget 2026 delivers $36 billion in mega deductions for corporations, but there is no mega deduction for everyday people. The temporary groceries benefit will quickly be swallowed up by rising food prices. Instead of gifting corporations $36 billion in mega deductions, will the Prime Minister redirect those resources to build a network of public grocery stores to introduce competition and bring down prices?

Caroline Desrochers, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Housing and Infrastructure

“We are spending money to help Canadians. We plan to end homelessness in ten years. We are putting billions of dollars into affordable and transitional housing, and two billion dollars into mental health and addiction care.”

Mr. Speaker, the colleague knows very well that we are here for real Canadians with real programs. We are investing in affordable homes. We have committed to ending homelessness in the next 10 years. We are putting $10 billion through Build Canada Homes to build transitional housing, $5 billion to support projects that bring together housing and social projects, $6.5 million to renew the Reaching Home program and $2 billion for a health infrastructure that will help Canadians with mental health and addiction problems. We are here for Canadians, real Canadians.
