Mr. Speaker, we are always prepared to answer questions before the Standing Committee on Finance. What is strange is to see the Conservatives talk down the Canadian economy in every one of their questions, even though international institutions and the Bank of Canada recognize that there are external factors at play. The good news is that Canada has the second-fastest growth rate in the G7. One would think the Conservatives would celebrate our workers, our industries and Canada. If they do not want to do that, we will always be here on this side of the House to stand up for our workers and our industries.

Mr. Speaker, what Canadians are hearing is an opposition leader who is always criticizing the Canadian economy, and I am sure they are sick of it. Members on this side of the House are confident. Canada is attracting talent from around the world. Canada is one of the rare countries in the world that can build a ship, build a car and certify a nuclear power plant. Canada is a country that has the critical minerals needed for the 21st century. We are producing more energy. Canada is the only G7 country with a free trade agreement with every other G7 country. Rather than criticizing, the Leader of the Opposition should be celebrating the hard work of Canadians across the country.

He should listen to the voices in this House, like when we extended the suspension of the excise fuel tax. That is helping Canadians. That is helping families. That is helping truckers. Mr. Speaker, the Bank of Canada understands and acknowledges the challenges in the global economy. However, it is Wednesday, and I have good news. In fact, Canada has the strongest fiscal position in the G7, the lowest net debt to GDP in the G7 and one of the lowest deficits to GDP in the G7. The Bank of Canada has seen that we are going to have the second-fastest growth in the G7. On top of that, we are investing to be an energy superpower. We are going to build Canada strong together.

Mr. Speaker, one would expect that after 20 years in this House, the Leader of the Opposition would read The Fiscal Monitor. If he took the time to read it, he would see that public debt charges are at 1.7%, one of the historical lows we have seen in Canada and well below the 6.5% in the 1990s. Canada has the strongest fiscal position in the G7. We are going to use that to build this country, help Canadians and defend our sovereignty. We are going to build Canada strong.

Mr. Speaker, the people of Quebec City who are watching us will realize that, sadly, the leader of the Conservative Party, who is the Leader of the Opposition, did two things when the House had the opportunity to vote on the Canada groceries and essentials benefit, a measure that helps 12 million Canadians, including many in Quebec City. One, he voted against the benefit. Two, he instructed his caucus to vote against it. The people of Quebec City will remember that. On this side of the House, we will always be there to stand up for the people of Quebec City.

He is an outstanding representative for his region, and he understands full well that, through our last budget and the budget we will table on November 5, we will continue building Canada. We are going to equip ourselves to be masters in our own house. Quebeckers understand that. We are going to invest in our future. We are going to invest in affordability. Madam Speaker, I know it is Friday, so let me give my Conservative colleagues a takeaway as they go to their ridings to help their constituents. They should probably talk about the fact that Canada is projected to have the second fastest-growing economy in the G7 in 2027. They probably should talk among themselves as to why they are voting against measures that will support Canadians with respect to affordability. Most of question period today was about affordability. The sad thing for the people watching at home is that they say they are asking questions and they are talking a good game, but when it is time to vote they are missing in action. My colleague is an experienced member, and he knows full well that we are there to support our SMEs through our regional economic development agencies. Our SMEs are the beating heart of Canada’s economy. We were there to support them, to help them pivot to new markets and to support Canadian workers. Every day is a good day to fight for Canadians.

Madam Speaker, I imagine that my colleague was really busy yesterday, but he no doubt saw the press announcement by the Government of Ontario: more than $8 billion in support for Canada’s steel sector, Canada’s automotive sector and the development of critical minerals. That is exactly what the government has done. We were there to support workers with more than $25 billion and to help our industries pivot to new markets. We will always be there for our workers and our industries and to make Canada a strong nation.

Six million people are going to receive the Canada child benefit, 400,000 kids will be supported with the national school food program, 465,000 people will receive the Canada disability benefit, 12 million Canadians will receive the Canada groceries and essentials benefit, and 900,000 kids will be supported with early learning and child care. I could go down the list, but I will give it to him so he can inform his constituents the next time he engages with them.

Madam Speaker, I hope the people in the member’s riding are watching TV this morning, because they will know that the member, and all the Conservative members, voted against every affordability measure we put forward to support Canadians. It is a shame. Every time we said that we would support Canadians with the price of food, with the price of gas and with the price of all, the Conservatives were missing in action. Why do they not come on board and help us to support Canadians? That is what the people in the member’s riding are expecting.

The IMF just recently said that Canada would have the second-fastest growth in the G7. We have been acting on the three most important things for Canadians: the cost of food, the cost of gas and the cost of homes. Madam Speaker, I know the people of Lévis—Lotbinière would like their member of Parliament to vote with a voice that loud. Unfortunately, when it came time to vote for the Canada groceries and essentials benefit, we did not hear the loud voice of the member for Lévis—Lotbinière. He voted against it. I know people in Lévis—Lotbinière, and some of them are very dear to me. They would like their MP to stand up in the House and defend their interests.
